2015 Workshop & Symposiums
SYMPOSIUM
PHOTO BOOKS TODAY
Friday, February 6th, 7:30 pm Keynotes
Saturday, February 7th, 9:00am - 5:30pm Symposium
Photographers have more options than ever before for presenting their work as a book – and meanwhile the notion of the photo book itself is changing, no longer bound by the limitations of the traditional monograph. There is a burgeoning market for photography in book form, with many new publishers, dealers, and gallery imprints serving a rapidly growing number of collectors. This symposium will address several issues of value to photographers and to anyone interested in photo books.
Topics include:
· Building the photo book – conceptual and technical issues: print on demand; high-end, crafted editions; digital editions and hybrid digital/print editions; finding collaborators; services for hire
· Finding and connecting with the audience: dealers, distributors, collectors, libraries
· Photo-based artists’ books – thinking beyond the monograph
· Publishing as a business and an art form
· The advantages and limitations of digital technology
Registration:
$80.00 general, $40.00 students with ID

WORKSHOPS
PhotoAlliance workshops are meant to foster a continuing conversation between the art and craft of photography, between the individuals that make things and the practice of creating.
We design specific opportunities to take pictures, talk about pictures and share work and ideas. Groups are small, and the instructor's are highly committed and engaged artists. Generally the workshops are for all ages and all experiences.
Our mission is to support the understanding, appreciation and creation of contemporary photography.
2015 Pt. Reyes Workshop | Robert Dawson
The Marin coast is a land with a fascinating past and a timeless present. It is a land of hills, cliffs, beaches, and coves that is rich in history and startling beauty. It has some of the most interesting geology that can be readily seen anywhere along California's spectacular coast. Its' varied plant and animal life will make for many rich photographic possibilities. We will tour and photograph the exquisite open environment of the area and as well as examine the photographic work of the students.
We will meet Friday evening to get acquainted, talk about the area and begin to look at work. On Saturday, the early morning light will draw us to the landscape at Pt. Reyes National Seashore. We will visit and photograph several natural landscapes and historic points of interest. After lunch we will return to Inverness where we will to look at work and discuss all things photographic. Saturday night brings the opportunity to make some moonlit Bay images. Sunday morning will give us another opportunity to explore the beautiful landscape of Pt. Reyes. The workshop will conclude on Sunday at noon.
Instruction will be given in all camera formats and students will be given a variety of approaches to the landscape, plant and wildlife, and history of the Marin Coast. Workshop members will have the opportunity to have their prints or digital slides critiqued by the group. Although we will drive to most sites, some hiking will take place so workshop members should be prepared. This is a landscape that demands to be seen on foot!
